I wanted to drop in on a topic that has been very prevalent in my life recently. It is about the meaning behind “responsibility”. In particular the break down of this word being “response” and “ability”. If you look at the traditional definition of “Responsibility” as described by google dictionary it says “a thing that one is required to do as part of a job, role, or legal obligation.” Instead I invite you to think about this word as “Your ability to Respond” In my opinion the traditional definition falls short of how powerful this word truly is. In my opinion the word responsibility goes far beyond what is required of you, but instead it spands limitlessly. I believe it is our responsibility to take ownership of everything in our life and reality. Responsibility isn’t about talking, thinking or even the process of taking action. It’s about opportunity, It’s about having the opportunity to take action. When you accept that you are responsible for everything, it is extremely eradicating to all previous thought restrictions. It gives you the freedom to believe nothing is stopping you from achieving your goals, and to design your future. When you take control of your responses you become less reactive. Life then stops happening “to you” and instead you choose which way you would like your life to go. This allows you to take a step back from the chaos of day to day life and be able to choose which direction you’d like the situation to go. Some People may believe that responsibility can lead to restriction. The responsibility of owning a business, of taking on a new role at work, of children, of your pet….the list goes on and on. But I invite you to think of this in a new light. It is your responsibility to now control how to navigate these obligations that you are committed to. You do not “have” to do anything. It is all a choice. Now that being said, I encourage you to set your ambitions high. Realizing your responsibility is limitless, setting goals that match that potential is extremely important. Even setting goals that may be scary or even seem unachievable at the moment, yet taking full responsibility to take action steps toward them, can create more productivity then creating small goals and stopping when they are achieved. One helpful drill to see where your action vs. responsibility lies if as follows. Your Responsibility vs Action ratio: How to track your Responsibility vs Action percentage: Step 1) Create a Comprehensive To Do list for the week. I rank my “To-Do’s” into these 3 categories
Step 2) Track which ones are completed by the end of the week. Step 3) Divide your completed items by your responsable items. Say you have 20 Action Items for the week and you complete 14. Great, you were 70% actionable this week! Most people are operating way below this so be good to yourself. If you are hitting 100% you are either a rock star or you have more responsibility than you wrote down! If the prior, I encourage you to be more ambitious next week! Either way your life will be transforming quickly into the direction you’d like it go! It is unbelievably freeing when you accept responsibility for everything in your life. When you accept that you are responsible for where you are today, and where you will be tomorrow. Taking responsibility is the first step towards action, and action is what is going to make the difference when you take designing your life in your own hands. Please reach out to me if you have any questions, and I am happy to write about any more topics your guys would be interested in hearing more about. Take Response-ability! Austin
